Dynamic vs. static QR codes: What’s the difference?

Compare dynamic and static QR codes, how they work, when to use each type, and why editable destinations matter after printing.

The main difference between a static and dynamic QR code is what the printed pattern contains. A static QR code stores its final content directly. A dynamic QR code usually stores a short, managed URL that redirects each scan to the current destination.

That extra redirect makes a dynamic QR code more flexible: you can change the destination, apply routing rules, and review scan activity without changing the code already on a poster, package, menu, or sign. A static code is simpler when the content is permanent and those controls are unnecessary.

What is a static QR code?

A static QR code encodes the final data in the pattern itself. That data might be a website URL, plain text, contact details, an email address, or Wi-Fi credentials. Scanning decodes the stored value directly; a QR code management platform does not need to decide where the visitor goes.

This makes static codes useful for information that is unlikely to change. There is no managed redirect to maintain, and the code can keep returning its embedded data for as long as the physical artwork remains scannable.

What is a dynamic QR code?

A dynamic QR code encodes a managed scan URL instead of the final destination. When someone scans, the service receives the request and redirects it to the destination currently assigned to that code. The printed QR pattern stays the same when that assignment changes.

“Dynamic” describes the redirect workflow, not a separate QR code standard. The flexibility comes from the layer between the scan and the final page. Five differences that matter in practice

1. Destination changes

A static code is tied to what was encoded when it was created. A dynamic code lets you update the destination after distribution. That matters when an offer ends, a product page moves, an event agenda changes, or a campaign needs a new landing page.

2. Scan analytics

A dynamic service can record a request before redirecting it, which makes campaign-level scan reporting possible. A static code can still point to a URL with campaign parameters, and the destination site may measure visits, but the QR code itself does not create a separate scan event.

3. Routing by market or context

Every scan of a static URL returns the same encoded address. A dynamic workflow can apply rules before sending visitors onward. For example, one printed code can use a default page while directing scans from specific countries to local stores, languages, or offers.

4. Cost and operational ownership

Static QR codes do not require an ongoing QR platform subscription. Dynamic codes depend on a resolver, so someone must maintain the account, domain, destinations, and access. 5. Data density

When should you use a static QR code?

Choose a static QR code when:

  • The encoded information is final and unlikely to change.
  • You do not need QR-specific scan analytics or routing rules.
  • You want no dependency on an ongoing QR management service.
  • The code is for a short-lived or easily replaceable asset.

A personal Wi-Fi card, a fixed email address, or an internal label with permanent text can all be sensible static uses. Simplicity is a benefit when flexibility would add no value.

When should you use a dynamic QR code?

Choose a dynamic QR code when:

  • The printed material may outlive its first destination.
  • You need to correct or replace links without reprinting.
  • Different countries should receive different destinations.
  • You want scan activity associated with a particular campaign.
  • Several people need to manage live QR codes in one place.

Can you turn a static QR code into a dynamic one?

Not after it has been printed if it directly encodes the final destination. The pattern is the data, so changing that data means creating a new pattern.

There is one important nuance: if the static code points to a URL you control, you may be able to change what that URL serves or add a redirect on your own infrastructure. The printed data is still unchanged, but you have effectively added dynamic behavior behind it. Plan ownership and redirect continuity before relying on that approach.

Do dynamic QR codes expire?

The printed pattern does not have a built-in expiration date. However, a dynamic code only works while its managed URL, domain, and resolver remain active. A code may stop redirecting if a subscription ends, a domain expires, or the campaign is deliberately unpublished.
