Before printing QR codes, check the exported image, open the intended destination, and scan a physical sample at its final size. An image that reads on your screen can still be difficult to scan on small, curved, reflective, or poorly lit printed material.
Use this checklist for packaging, posters, business cards, or event signs. GeoQR's free QR code checker can help you read an image and inspect visual observations before you send the artwork to a printer.
1. Check the final exported image
Test the artwork that will actually be used. A design preview is not a substitute for checking the exported file after resizing, placing it in a layout, or adding a logo. Those steps can affect contrast, clear space, and the sharpness of the pattern.
- Open the QR code checker and choose Upload image.
- Use a PNG, JPEG, or still WebP image. You can also paste a screenshot or take a photo on a supported device.
- Read the decoded contents and compare them with your intended URL or information. The checker does not open the link automatically.
- Review the image observations and any suggested next steps. If the image cannot be read, try a sharper export or a closer, straighter photo with the whole code visible.
The checker accepts images up to 10 MB and 24 megapixels. For SVG, PDF, or HEIC artwork, export a supported image or take a screenshot. Keep the original production file for your printer; the image check only describes the image you supplied.
2. Keep clear space around the QR pattern
A standard QR code needs an empty border, often called a quiet zone, at least four modules wide on each side. A module is one small square in the code. DENSO WAVE explains this in its QR code margin guidance.
Keep text, cut lines, borders, and nearby artwork out of that space. Check the code after it has been placed in the final layout: a clean standalone export can lose its margin when cropped or positioned too close to other content.
3. Check contrast, size, and logo placement
Start with a dark pattern on a light background. Make sure gradients, transparent areas, and the material underneath do not make parts of the code hard to distinguish. A large logo can obscure too much of the pattern even when it looks good in the design file.
There is no single print size that works for every code and scanning distance. Pattern density, printing quality, and the reader all matter. DENSO WAVE's module-size guidance explains why the size of each square and the scanner's capabilities must be considered together.
If your sample struggles, try a larger code, stronger contrast, more clear space, or a smaller logo. Use the custom QR code builder to explore design settings, then test the final export again.
4. Test the destination separately
A readable code can still lead to the wrong page. For a managed QR link, the address encoded in the pattern is usually different from the final destination. Scan the published code and check where you arrive.
When available, the checker's optional Check destination action requests the URL and follows HTTP redirects. It sends the URL to GeoQR and may register a visit. It does not render the destination page, so open the page yourself to review its content and important actions.
If you use country redirects, device rules, or a temporary schedule, test those cases as well as the default. One destination check observes one request, not every possible route through your campaign.
5. Scan a physical sample before the full print run
- Print at the intended size on the actual material.
- Test with more than one phone, including iPhone and Android.
- Try the expected scanning distance, angle, and lighting.
- Check for glare, folds, curves, and nearby artwork.
- Confirm the final destination works on mobile.
Save the artwork version and note which sample you tested. You can download the checker's PDF report for its image observations, but keep physical print-test notes separately. The report is not a certification of the printed material.
What if the code is already printed?
A dynamic QR code lets you change a managed destination, but it cannot change the size, colors, or pattern already on paper.
